Music Mondays {Dream On}

Happy Monday everyone! I know I’m running a little late today but the exciting thing is — WE’RE BACK! ;) We took a week hiatus and have decided to start hosting Music Mondays every 2 weeks, rather than every week. We’re both two mamas who both have our own creative businesses, and rather than let you guys down if we can’t  post each week, we thought it better to have the challenges every other week.

So what does this mean for me? Well, I really think I can get in more tutorials now that we have 2 weeks to work with our songs and hopefully provide a little more advice in how I blend different things together in my projects. Anyway, enough chit chat, let’s move onto today’s song, shall we? :)

I chose “Dream On” by Aerosmith today. I have L-O-V-E-D Aerosmith since I was a kid. It’s one of the only “rock” groups I think I actually liked listening to … maybe it’s because of Steven Tyler’s unique, crazy, scratchy voice or Joe Perry’s amazin’ guitar skillz. Our challenge for you today is to create a project based on a dream you have for yourself or dreams, in general. Try something new. Listen to the music, try and capture the energy or take in your own direction. Once you’ve checked out my post, be sure to head over to Erin’s Blog to see what she’s created for you today, too!

For today, I decided to do something different. I love making cards, but I also really, really, really enjoy mixed media and altered art. There is something insanely satisfying after you’ve glued, pieced, collaged, glittered, glazed. Ah, it is completely therapeutic. I made a mixed media piece today using the products below {pom pom trim, button, and misc. supplies not pictured – see recipe for more details}:

And the canvas. {click to see larger}

Music Mondays {Rolling in the Deep}

Could have had it all,
Rolling in the deep,
You had my heart inside of your hands,
But you played it with a beating…

Throw your soul through every open door,
Count your blessings to find what you look for,
Turn my sorrow into treasured gold,
You’ll pay me back in kind and reap just what you’ve sown…

Ironically enough, today’s Valentine’s Day and our song is “Rolling in the Deep” which is a break up song. An emotional, fiery, break up song, no less. (Ha!) Sometimes love makes us do crazy things. Sometimes we love so much it hurts. But, in the end, love is what makes us feel real. It gives us reason to keep going.

And even though Adele’s lyrics are strong and vindictive, she is clearly hurting knowing that she’s given her all. My card is based on that sentiment, exactly. Something that seemed so beautiful and true, has been tattered and destroyed in this song. Yet, beyond the wounds, the beauty of the heart is still there.

Erin has challenged me & you all to create a card that’s distressed or otherwise imperfect. I distressed and sanded. And misted. I’m excited to see everyone elses’ interpretations.

Here is today’s song if you’ve never heard it – Adele “Rolling in the Deep” {Adele’s voice is beyond amazing. it’s unique, soulful, gorgeous, and just plain inspiring}:

Heart: the voice you should listen to above all others.

I know I always do.

And so, my card for today (click photo for larger view):

Music Mondays {Hotel California}

Good Morning! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Thanks so much for stopping by for another Music Monday! I bet you all thought we forgot about them, but nope, just took a week hiatus since I was out of town and Erin was doing her big releases! Yay! If you haven’t heard the news yet, Erin has just released two paper packs and a stamp set. You can check out all the details over at her blog – they are SUPER cute!! So proud of her!

Last week, I was at CHA  with my mom, one of my bestest friends, DoBea, and met up with Lorie and the Scrapping Cottage crew. The entire weekend was amazing. We had great weather, and stayed right in Downtown L.A. where the atmosphere was truly contagious.

So, in honor of our trip {my aunt Rosita even took DoBea and I up to Santa Barbara for the day on Tuesday. GORGEOUS, love going there.}, I chose “Hotel California” by the Eagles for this weeks’ song. The challenge is to create something inspired by California. Think beaches, mountains, busy traffic, shopping, farmer’s markets, show biz… there’s a little something for everyone there. Here’s the song, in case you aren’t familiar with this classic. ;)

So my card doesn’t necessarily reflect the lyrics of this song, but music is all about making you “feel”, right? This song makes me think of driving up the coast at night, or heading into the mountains.

Some of you might not know, but I’m from Orange County, CA, and spent summers there and spent the school year in Wisconsin. It’s hard to say where my “home town” really is, but my heart always resides on the beaches, in the mountains, and in the busy atmosphere of Southern California. I love everything about it – except the traffic – and can’t think of any other place that makes me instantly happy.

So, I decided to design a card for myself. What the heck am I talking about? Yep, this card is all me for me. The distressed edges on the outside, soft blend of colors inside, and the rustic twine coupled with the cheery luxe lemondrop twine (The Twinery) – all me. And of course, my most favoritest Unity Stamp ever – Melody’s Ross’s “Free Spirit” design from “Brave Girl Boots”. I hope you’ll join us and link up your “California Inspired” creation!

MATERIALS USED:
Cardstock: Dark Chocolate, Vintage Cream {Papertrey Ink}
Ink: Rich Cocoa {Memento}, Milled Lavender, Victorian Velvet, Dried Marigold, Scattered Straw {Distress Ink}
Stamps: Brave Girl Boots {Unity}
Twine: Lemondrop {The Twinery}, Natural Rustic Twine {Papertrey Ink}
Misc: Button {Papertrey Ink}

Music Mondays {Satellite}

Hi Everyone! Welcome to another Music Monday! Thank you all for the wonderful birthday wishes and sweet comments you left for me on my blog, Facebook, and via email!! I had the best birthday, surrounded by family, friends & good times! My husband and I went to a really nice restaurant near the water (although it’s ice right now ;) ) and enjoyed some yummy wine and steak!

Erin emailed me this weekend and found a song she liked a little better than the first one she picked. I was totally fine with it because I love the second song she chose, “Satellite” by Guster. The song is the inspiration this week, with a “stars, moon, or sky” theme. I wanted to create something that was kind fun but also gender-neutral. Here’s the song in case you don’t know it:

I knew immediately I would use Unity’s January Kit of the Month, but wanted to use a rocket ship to go with it. Hmmm. I don’t have any rocket ship stamps. Or paper. Hmmm. So I drew one! I used my Copic Multi liners (these are wonderful for touching up your stamped images, too. They won’t bleed when colored over with your Copics), Copic Markers, and my white Gelly Roll pen for the highlights.

MATERIALS USED:
Cardstock: Smokey Shadow {Papertrey Ink}
Ink:Tuxedo Black – sentiment {Memento}, Gray - to ink edges on sentiment – from Beach Ball Paintbox Pigment Inkpad {ColorBox}
Pattern Paper: Sunkissed {Bo Bunny}
Stamps: Sentiment from January Kit of the Month {Unity}
Misc:Border Punch {Martha Stewart}, Copic Markers, Copic Multi Liner 0.5, White Gelly Roll Pen

Hope you all enjoyed today’s card – I’ll be back later today with the winners from KinderStampO’s 34 Years and Counting Blog Hop and the Peachy Keen Stamps Blog Hop! Now, head on over to Erin’s blog to see who our Music Monday Winner was from last week, what she’s created for you today and to link up to play along to win this adorable Unity Stamp:
Unity - So and So Loves

Music Mondays {Golden}

Good Morning Music Monday lovers! You guys are so awesome! 32 entries on our first challenge – how fun is that?! Erin & I loved looking at everyone’s entries and seeing how one song can inspire so many different looks!

For today’s song, it was my turn to pick and I chose “Golden” by Jill Scott. I love the message in this song, the video is great, and her voice just makes you feel empowered. This week, try creating a card, layout or project either using gold in your color scheme or representing something golden in your heart. Or take it in a completely different direction, it doesn’t matter! As long as it’s inspired by this song, link it up! :) Here it is if you haven’t heard it yet. Jill Scott is one of my favorite artists. One of my other favorites from her is “He Loves Me”. Her music speaks right from her soul!

I originally went in another direction with this card, but saw the sketch over at CardPatterns on Saturday (One of our Market Street DT members, Tracy Shultz, is an admin, and I love seeing their inspiration over there!) and decided to give the sketch a try. Their cards are beyond beautiful, here is my attempt! Don’t forget to hop over to Erin’s blog to see what she created (it’s pretty much gorgeous)!

MATERIALS USED:
Cardstock: Kraft, Summer Sunrise {Papertrey Ink}, Gold Specialty {Recollections}
Pattern Paper: Life is Good {Echo Park}
Ribbon: Dark Chocolate Topnotch Twill {Papertrey Ink}, Gold {from Christmas stash}
Misc: Paper Flower {Recollections}, Glimmer Mist {Iridescent Gold}, Pearl Dimensionals {Martha Stewart}, Vintage-style Button {Tim Holtz}

And the WINNER from Music Monday – You are the Best Thing {$15.00 Gift Certificate to Market Street Stamps} is… Aimee!!! Congratulations, Aimee, please contact me {handmadebyangelica at gmail dot com} so I can send you your certificate!

This week you’ll be playing along for a chance to win a PAGODA Cricut Cartridge courtesy of Erin!! Just link up your card below by next Monday to be entered to win! The winner of the cart and new challenge will be up next Monday on Erin’s blog. Good luck everyone! Thanks for playing along!
